Book Sales Happy Dance

My agent has reported two “spikes” in sales of The Speed of Dark in the past month–so of course I’m happy about that.   The most recent was 92 copies in Portland, Maine.  WOW!

For anyone who’s contemplating using this book in a book club, class, or other reading group, please be aware that my publisher, Del Rey, may  have some special materials available, and I will be happy to do an email interview for your group.

Travel time is limited, but technology’s getting better every day–now that I have broadband, I might even be able to manage an online chat session.

(And now, back to the Happy Dance of  “People are reading my book, my book!  People are reading my book!!!”)

Congrats! It’s one its way to becoming a classic.

Thanks. Some of the letters I’ve had about it were heartwrenching as well as heartwarming.

And someone asked just yesterday if I’d ever done a script of it. Um…no. Not yet, anyway. I doubt my earlier dabbling in writing for stage is up to the task…I think turning such an interior book into a play that would actually work onstage would be very difficult.

It seems more adaptable to a movie, but I could be wrong.

When it was optioned for a movie, the money person was thinking of exactly the wrong actor (in my opinion) and it never went any further. Maybe someone else thought, as I did, that that person could not play Lou.

I’ve never done a screenplay, just stage plays (and short ones.) There’s an article in this week’s SCIENCE on technology and education, that suggests why this book, in particular, is less likely to have the effect I wanted in a visual medium.

But I could be wrong…have been before.

Congratulations Elizabeth. I would be very happy to see a movie of Speed of Dark. Hope that happens some day.

Thanks! Someone else will have to do the screenplay–I don’t have the skills. I do understand something about stagecraft, after…um…seven plays, I guess it was…but I’m no expert.
